Things to Do

There are so many ways to enjoy Fred Hayes State Park at Starvation! Check out all the ways you can make memories with the adventures listed below.

OHV Use

OHVs are only allowed at Knight Hollow Campground. County-owned dirt roads are open (including the road from Knight Hollow to the town of Duchesne) in the nearby area. Street legal ATVs are allowed anywhere a normal car, truck or RV can go. They are not allowed to travel off-road in areas where normal vehicles are not allowed to travel off-road.

Please take some time and read the “Utah OHV laws” that can be found online here or in a pamphlet available at the park. These laws are enforced and include having your machines currently registered, requiring any person under 18 years of age wearing an approved helmet and having a safety certificate if you are under 16 years of age (must be at least 8 to operate on public lands).

Read more from the park

Here is a short list of nearby OHV riding opportunities with #1 being closest (25 miles). You must trailer your ATVs to get to these locations. Be aware that there are numerous Ute Indian Tribal Lands that surround the park and local area. The Tribe does not allow trespassing on their lands, including ATV use. Remember that if an area is not designated as open by the land managing agency, then it is closed to ATV use.

  • Ashley National Forest OHV Riding Opportunities
  • Vernal BLM riding opportunities

Fishing

Starvation Reservoir is one of the premier walleye fisheries in the state with numerous larger fish over 10 pounds being pulled from its clear waters each year. The reservoir is also home to Smallmouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Cutthroat Trout, carp, kokanee salmon and a few chubs. Rangers have observed that it is almost always feast or famine. Our advice is, if one species of fish is not biting there is a good chance that another is.

3D Archery Range

Our 3D archery range is located just west of the entrance station near Indian Bay. Practice your skills with shots ranging from 15 to 60 yards at varying angles and difficulty, at a variety of life-size targets. All ages are welcome. There is a waiver form located at the range that everyone must sign. If you are under 18 years of age you will need a parent’s signature on the waiver form.

Cost: The range is free with paid $10 park day-use fee, any camping fee or an annual pass.

Range Access and Hours: The range is open from April through November. However, due to staffing shortages during some of those months, the gate may be locked. Please call ahead or find us at the park to open the gate (or you can just walk in from the gate). From the end of May through September the gate is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p. m.

Jr. Ranger

Ever dreamed of becoming a park ranger? Now is your chance to see what it's like by joining our Jr. Ranger program at Fred Hayes State Park at Starvation.

Get Your Booklet: The booklets are free and can be picked at the park entrance station or the park headquarters(office). In the booklet, you will find fun activities that you can complete to earn your Jr. Ranger badge.

Get Your Badge: When you have finished the activities that interest you the most, bring the book back to the place you got it. An official will make sure you have completed enough activities and award you your badge.

Geocache

Geocaching is a fun sport where you search for hidden caches (boxes with items inside) by using a handheld GPS (global positioning system), an iPhone with the proper app downloaded, or a similar device. The owner of the cache gives the GPS coordinates to where the box is located, you enter those coordinates into your device and it takes you to the box. When you find the box you traditionally take an item from it and leave an item behind. Some have log books where you can log who you are and some thoughts about the experience.

There are numerous geo-cache locations around Fred Hayes State Park at Starvation with one of them being sponsored by the park and the others being sponsored by private individuals. Here is a list of some of the caches and their corresponding coordinates. All of these locations and more can be found at geocaching.com.

If you have never taken part in the geocaching experience then we can help you get started. At the park headquarters you can check out a GPS unit and we can even give you a short tutorial about how to use it. It’s a fun way to get outdoors and get some exercise.

Disc Golf

Looking for a fun way to spend time outdoors? Our 9-hole disc golf course offers a great challenge for players of all skill levels while providing beautiful views of Starvation Reservoir and the surrounding landscape. Whether you’re a seasoned disc golfer or trying the sport for the first time, the course is a fantastic way to get outside, enjoy some friendly competition and experience another side of the park.

What to Bring: Bring your favorite discs, gather your friends and family and see if you can make it through all 9 holes under par! Score sheets can be found in our Ranger Station!

Boating and paddling

Boating and Decontamination

Our boating season at Fred Hayes State Park at Starvation/Starvation Reservoir starts near the end of May and runs through the middle of September. If you come once there is a good chance you will come again after you see what a fantastic boating water Starvation really is.

With a water surface area of 3,500 acres, there are plenty of places to get away from the crowd and enjoy your “mini Lake Powell.” Water temperatures reach a balmy 73-74 degrees in the summer, and the water is crystal clear and clean.

Boats of all types welcome: Starvation is a great destination whether you are a powerboat enthusiast or a non-power boat enthusiast.

Boat Ramp/Docks

We have:

  • One large 4-lane cement boat ramp with a wedge dock in the middle
  • Two large courtesy docks (one has eight wings and the other has four)
  • Eight overnight slip rentals on the courtesy dock
  • Lighting
  • Fish cleaning station
Read more from the park

Parking your vessels: Boaters are allowed to park their vessels along the shore near their campsites in many of our campgrounds.

Stop the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species

Utah’s scenic waters provide recreational enjoyment for boaters year-round. Before launching your vessel, make sure to get familiar with the rules and requirements of boating in Utah, and help stop the spread of invasive quagga mussels. Learn about the STD of Sea

Please launch your boat at the main ramp: Because of the threat of quagga mussels entering the reservoir on an incoming vessel, we encourage all boaters to launch their boat at the main ramp where the boat can be inspected and given a green light to launch.

Boat Decontamination

From May 1st to October 1st the main entrance booth at Starvation is manned so you can talk with a worker there to get your boat inspected and washed if needed.

Off-Season Recommendations: In the off-season, our suggestion is that you call several days or more in advance and make an appointment. If you don’t call ahead, there is no guarantee that anyone will be working at the park on the day of your arrival.

Call to make an appointment: Please call us at 435-738-2326 Monday through Friday to make an appointment. In the off-season, we are in the office from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. or you can leave a message and we will call you back.

Out of Curiosity

Question: How warm does the water get in the summer?

Answer: In a typical year, the water reaches temperatures of 72-74º F from around the first part of July through the end of August.

Question: Does the reservoir freeze over every winter?

Answer: No, it does not freeze over every year. But, it freezes over more than not. Most years the ice reaches a thickness of 15-18 inches. It seems that there are always holes of open water and dangerous thin spots, especially by Freedom Bridge and near the inlet at Knight Hollow Campground. All areas of the reservoir don’t freeze over at the same time so you can’t count on the ice being the same everywhere.
